On the second day of the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament held at Ryogoku Kokugikan on May 11, ozeki Kirishima improved to 2-0 after defeating Yoshinofuji with a thrust-down technique. Meanwhile, fellow ozeki Takayasu also earned his second consecutive victory, continuing his strong start. In contrast, sekiwake Kotozakura and rising star Atamifuji faced disappointment, each falling to their second straight defeat. The tournament took a major blow as yokozuna Hoshoryu withdrew due to a right foot injury sustained on the opening day, leaving the sumo world without both grand champions for the first time in five years. Hoshoryu’s absence, combined with the ongoing hiatus of the other yokozuna, means the top division currently lacks its highest-ranked wrestlers, shifting attention to the ozeki and other contenders. The competition remains wide open as the tournament progresses.
