The Cleveland Cavaliers have evened their series against the Detroit Pistons at 2-2 with back-to-back victories, powered by Donovan Mitchell’s stellar second-half performance in Game 4. Despite the Cavs’ impressive showing and the Pistons’ struggles, Detroit head coach J.B. Bickerstaff directed his frustration toward the officiating, specifically linking it to comments made by Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson.

Bickerstaff criticized the referees and Atkinson’s remarks, noting a noticeable shift in calls since the latter spoke out. The series has been tightly contested, with each team protecting home court. Now, the action returns to Detroit for Game 5. But beyond player performances, officiating has become a flashpoint.

Atkinson had earlier commented on how his players needed to adjust to the referees’ style. Bickerstaff seized on those comments, claiming the Cavaliers have received favorable treatment ever since. The Pistons, a physical team that thrives on driving to the basket, have felt the impact.

Game 4’s free-throw disparity was stark: Cleveland converted 30 of 34 attempts, while Detroit shot just 12 free throws, making nine. “It’s unacceptable. We didn’t do enough to help ourselves,” Bickerstaff said after the game. “Ever since we came to Cleveland, the whistle has changed. There’s no way one guy on their team has more shots than our whole team. We can’t allow that to be the reason why, because we didn’t play well enough. But look at the foul count and the disparity — that’s the reason why. Since Kenny made comments about us, the whistle has changed.”

This tension adds another layer to an already competitive series. The Cavaliers thrived at the line in Game 4, but Bickerstaff’s public outcry could alter the officiating dynamic in Game 5 and beyond.
