Sun Xinran, a 15-year-old Chinese tennis sensation, continued her impressive run on the clay court season at the Plovdiv J300 tournament. She defeated seventh seed Anita 7-6(4), 6-4 in the quarterfinals to secure a spot in the semifinals. As the top seed of the event, Sun earned 140 ranking points, moving her to a career-high No. 8 in the junior world rankings.
In the first round, Sun dominated her wildcard opponent Plamenova with a score of 6-1, 6-0. She followed that up with a commanding 6-1, 6-4 victory over Poavensky in the second round. The quarterfinal match against Anita proved more challenging, with Sun needing a tiebreak to take the first set. However, she gained momentum in the second set, capitalizing on Anita’s errors to seal the win. Sun now sets her sights on the title.
Sun also competed in doubles at this tournament but fell in the semifinals, leaving her to focus entirely on her singles campaign. As one of only two players born in 2010 among the top 10 junior girls, Sun stands out. The other eight are all born in 2008 or 2009. Czech rising star Jana Kovackova holds the No. 6 spot with 1,977.25 points, while Sun trails closely with 1,798.5 points.
Hailing from Shenzhen, Guangdong, Sun started playing tennis at age 6 and has already won eight ITF junior singles titles. Her breakthrough year came in 2024, when she claimed consecutive titles at the J60 Doha, J60 Ulcinj, J60 Skopje, and the J300 Shanghai. She also finished runner-up at the J300 Beijing that year. In 2025, Sun added the J300 Nonthaburi crown to her resume. Her biggest achievement came in December 2025, when she won the U18 girls’ singles at the Orange Bowl, becoming the first Chinese player to win the U18 title at the prestigious tournament often called the cradle of champions. Zheng Qinwen reached the U18 final in 2018 but lost to Coco Gauff.
Sun’s next goal is to capture a junior Grand Slam singles title. At this year’s Australian Open junior championships, she reached the quarterfinals before falling in three sets to Russia’s Ekaterina Tupichina. While her technique is solid, her conditioning and mental resilience still need refinement. Nonetheless, Sun’s overall talent makes her a strong contender for junior Grand Slam glory. The last Chinese player to win a junior Grand Slam singles title was Wang Xiyu in 2018. As the top-ranked Chinese junior girl, Sun is poised to continue her ascent and shine on the international stage.
