Vasiliy Lomachenko Ends Retirement, Eyes ‘Big Fight’ Return This Year

Vasiliy Lomachenko is reportedly set to make a dramatic return to boxing after a brief retirement. The Ukrainian star, who enjoyed an extraordinary amateur career with a 396-1 record and two Olympic gold medals, transitioned to the professional ranks and challenged for a world title in just his second fight. Although he fell short in that bout, he quickly rebounded in his third outing, capturing the WBO featherweight title. He later added the WBO super-featherweight championship and unified the lightweight world titles.

Lomachenko earned widespread praise for moving up in weight and defeating top fighters like Jorge Linares and Jose Pedraza. However, he suffered two losses at 135 pounds: first to Teofimo Lopez in October 2020, and then a controversial defeat to Devin Haney in May 2023. He bounced back with a stoppage victory over George Kambosos in May 2024 to claim the IBF lightweight title, and it appeared that would be his final fight after officially announcing his retirement in June 2025 following months of speculation.

But that could all change now. According to Mike Coppinger, Lomachenko is ending his retirement and targeting a return later this year, with a focus on “big fights only.” As reported by Ring Magazine, sources say Lomachenko’s contract with Top Rank expires today, making him a promotional free agent. He has no interest in tune-up bouts and wants only major matchups.

Before retiring, Lomachenko was in talks with Gervonta Davis, but the fight never materialized due in part to a lingering back injury. With that issue now seemingly resolved, a clash with Davis is back on the table. Other intriguing options include Shakur Stevenson, who has long called for a bout with the former pound-for-pound superstar. Lomachenko’s return could reshape the lightweight division.
