NASCAR and the broader stock car racing community are grieving the sudden loss of Steve Mendoza, a longtime modified team owner and old-school driver. The sport’s official social media channels released a heartfelt statement honoring the beloved figure, who built a remarkable legacy alongside drivers like Andy Jankowiak and left an indelible mark on the racing world.
“NASCAR is saddened to learn of the passing of Steve Mendoza, a dedicated member of the racing community and owner in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. Steve’s passion for the sport was evident through his commitment to fielding competitive cars and supporting drivers, including his work with Andy Jankowiak and others throughout his time in the series. He was respected in the garage for his perseverance, his care for his team, and his love of modified racing,” the statement read. “Our thoughts are with Steve’s family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of working alongside him during this difficult time.”

Mendoza wasn’t just a team owner chasing business success. His deep passion for racing, particularly modified stock cars, was unmistakable. He collaborated with top-tier drivers, providing them with competitive equipment to achieve the best results. Speaking about teaming up with Tom Rogers Jr. for the WMT Miller Lite Salutes Wayne Anderson 200 at Riverhead, Mendoza once said, “Tommy’s hall of fame career at Riverhead speaks for itself, five Modified championships, 63 wins & counting, plus all his other success there too.”

Mendoza also shared a close bond with Andy Jankowiak. What began as a professional partnership quickly grew into a lasting friendship. When Jankowiak notched his ARCA victory earlier this year at Talladega Superspeedway, he surprised many by dedicating the win to his friend. After a dramatic final lap battle with Cleetus McFarland, Jankowiak crossed the line first and said, “I’ve had too much help, so many people that help make all of this happen. This has never been more of a team effort standing in Victory Lane at Talladega. What an adventure. This one’s for my best friend, Steve Mendoza. I’m wearing a green bandana for him. I love him so much, and I know he’s home watching.”
Mendoza was widely respected for his positive energy and genuine care for those around him. Though he is no longer with us, his legacy in modified racing and the lives he touched will endure.
